"PLACET" TABLE - Lot 18
"PLACET" TABLE large square shaped salon table Louis XIV period, around 1700-1710. Richly carved and gilded wood. H. 46 cm L. 67 x 67 cm Many chips in the gilding. Upholstery matching the armchair to the queen (Lot n° 17) and the sofa (Lot n° 13). This model with belt hidden by the cover in studded fabric with bangs is rare because the base is very low. It rests on four baluster feet with small capitals joined by an important "x" shaped strut of four flat balusters. The sculpture, of foliage motifs, foliage edging and rosette, is of good quality. The placet at the court of Versailles was essential to "etiquette". This seat, of a lower rank than the chair or the armchair, was the object of much envy. Superbly covered with a brocade "à la dentelle", Regency style, copper satin background, gold decoration of a flower blooming in lace ribbons (wear on the cushion). We thank M. de Villelume, fabric expert, for his opinion. A LARGE LOUIS XIV SQUARE, CARVED AND GILT-WOOD STOOL OR "PLACET CIRCA 1700-1710 H. 18,1 in. L. 26,3 x 26,3 in. Many chips in the gilding. Upholstery matching to the armchair (Lot n°17) and to the settee (Lot n°13).
