PAIR OF LARGE OVOID BALUSTER VASES - Lot 7
PAIR OF LARGE OVOID BALUSTER VASES Italy in Lazio, around 1650 for the body in brecciated jasper. H. 55,5 cm L. 36 cm - Base : 12 x 12 cm Depth of the interior : 11,5 cm EXCEPTIONAL MOUNTING OF THE HANDLES IN GOLDEN BRONZE ATTRIBUTED TO PIERRE GOUTHIÈRE (1732-1813) Master chiseller in 1758 France, around 1780 The two retractable necks have been restored. Small misses on a pedestal on a pedestal, base slightly dented. Damaged foot for one. Restored pedestal on the other. They stand on a square base and a pedestal. The ovoid body presents in the lower part a frieze of protruding gadroons under a large smooth part highlighting the extraordinary natural decoration of this hard stone. The curved and molded neck is retractable and decorated with a frieze of hollow gadroons. The handles are formed by a goat's head that originate on the smooth surface. The execution of these large bronzes is strikingly realistic. Their fixation, given the weight of the vases, required a powerful rod, held by a nut. To do this, the neck had to be sawn off at its base and the interior had to be hollowed out to a length of 11.5 cm. The importance of carved vases in the 18th century, despite the rarity of jasper and the remarkable execution of the handles under Louis XVI, makes us think of the Collection of Louis-Marie Augustin, V Duke of Aumont (1709-1782), who was known for the embellishment of marble and hard stone vases.
