ABOUT :

This is the third sale in the R&R Collection, an invitation to travel, again in the company of our expert, Alexandre CHEVALIER.

While searching for a work table for his brother, a leatherworker, in the halls of Hôtel Drouot, a Bidjar gallery rug caught his eye.

He was no stranger to the world of carpets.

Of Iranian origin, Monsieur R. grew up surrounded by beautiful pieces, his uncle being a dealer and the leading importer of carpets in Paris since 1946.

This led to his passion for the textile medium and his taste for the Collection.

He played the auction game and won this gallery for 500 francs.

Delighted with his acquisition, he showed it to his uncle. The latter offered to sell it back to him, and in just one week managed to get him 8 times its original price.

Satisfied with this increase in value, the fabric of his vocation was now knotted: he opened his Tapis & Tapisserie gallery in 1975 on rue Yves Toudic in the 10th arrondissement of Paris.

It's a vocation he'll always share with his brother, and has done since 1977.

The high point of his career was the sale of a top-quality silk Tabriz rug with a "4 seasons" design and exceptional dimensions of 4.30 x 3.20 m, sold at the time for 1,100,000 francs by Maître Guy Loudmer.

However, Mr. R. has his own preferences. Above all, he cherishes the so-called "Mameluke" carpets, "rarities of the Haute Epoque" still largely unknown on the market and with mysterious origins.

Continually learning from his purchases, Mr. R. acquires the finest pieces, which he sells to the most prestigious houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's, as well as to international dealers in France, America, England and Italy.
