PAIRE DE CONSOLES EN DEMI-LUNE
* ATTRIBUTED TO JEAN-BAPTISTE TILLIARD (1723-1798), Master in Paris in 1752 EXCEPTIONAL PAIR OF CONSOLES IN HALF-LIGHT Louis XVI period, around 1780. Richly carved beechwood, gilding in three colors and light gray and white lacquer. H. 90,5 cm L. 82 cm. D. 45,5 cm On one of the consoles, a garland of flowers is detached but complete. On the second one, half of the laurel wreath half of the laurel wreath is missing. Passport N° 236965 delivered on 29/09/2022 by the Ministry of Culture. The belt with four redents is carved with a frieze of interlaces decorated with quartefoils alternating with a daisy (loyalty). A frieze of rais de coeur underlines it, the upper part is made of a smooth golden ribbon. Four rings are inserted on the face of the belt without care to suspend through the four redents, seven small garlands of flowers. The marble top, straight, is a Carrara venatino of beautiful quality. Masterpiece of carpentry of the Faubourg in Paris. The dazzling carving is attributed to François Toussaint Foliot (1748, around 1839), master in 1773. The three-color gilding is attributed to the master gilder Marion, who worked regularly for Tilliard. The furniture made by J.B. Tilliard II is rare. He was received as a master carpenter in 1752, but was slow to be registered, and it was only in 1764 that he took over his father's workshop. Jean-Baptiste II will be ordinary carpenter of the Garde-Meuble of the Crown. As this pair of consoles proves, the corporate regulations obliged master carpenters to collaborate with qualified sculptors or gilders for very elaborate furniture or seats. Reference models : - Model to be compared with the console, Artcurial sale of July 22, 2020, lot n°34, which bears the stamp of Tilliard. The decoration of the belt, the sculpture of the garland of flowers and especially the ring that closes the top of the feet are similar. However, the ensemble does not have the excellence and refinement of our model (Fig. 1). - Chair, 1780-1781 in carved and gilded beechwood, designed by Gondoin and made in 1780-1781 by François II Foliot for the salon du Rocher (Belvedere) in the gardens of the Petit Trianon. Collections of the Palace of Versailles, inventory number V 5358. The uprights of the backrest are similar to the legs of our consoles. (Fig. 2) "Hymn to Love, with the usual attributes of quivers and arrows and the language of flowers "speaking of love". Presumably a commissioned work for a wedding, from the merchant François-Charles Darnault. Each one rests on four feet with acanthus on a ball, and in the center of the spacer on a fifth foot with the same decoration but in the shape of a leafy base. The elongated and curved "x" shaped spacer is carved on the sides with a sides with a frieze of waves and on the underside with a ribbon ribbon twisted in a molding. The four long tapered legs with seven flutes have a light grey lacquered base and are carved on the upper part with two of two acanthus bases separated by a smooth ring constriction. smooth ring. A fine border of flowers surrounds the fluted part of the legs. the fluted part of the feet. (See the chair of the Rock pavilion at the Petit Trianon, by François Toussaint Foliot around 1780/1781 after Jacques Gondoin : for the amounts of the back in fluted spindle with spirals of flowers). The singular spacer exposes a standing quiver, maintained by flowers and foliage, the whole very finely carved and gilded in three colors. The quiver, whose case is twisted fluted, shows the tail of all the arrows, which means "shared love". A garland of flowers is placed in a scarf around it and extends on the spacer. On either side, a laurel branch (victory and success). The realism of the sculpture of the flowers makes it possible to identify them all identify them all: roses (love), daisies (fidelity), clematis (lasting love), jasmine (love and pure feelings). The sunflower (admiration and adoration) is sculpted on the circular on the circular center of the spacer, precisely under the quiver. ATTRIBUTED TO JEAN-BAPTISTE TILLIARD (1723-1798),.
